Stanley Gibbons Baldwin’s Puts $4M Price Tag on Crown Coin

Stanley Gibbons Baldwin’s will offer The Crown Coin, which marked Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, at its upcoming auction later this month.

The 24-karat gold coin contains 6,426 Gemological Institute of America (GIA)-certified diamonds with a total weight of 483.57 carats. The historic piece will carry an upper estimate of GBP 3 million ($4 million) at the auction house’s September 25 London sale, according to its website.

At its center is a 1-kilogram gold coin with a face value of GBP 10,000 ($13,644), recognized as legal tender, encircled by 10 28-gram coins featuring the official portraits from Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and the Queen’s Virtues inspired by the Victoria Memorial. The coin includes motifs relating to the queen’s tiaras, while the obverse displays a gold and diamond Union Jack. The coin has a total weight of 3.61 kilograms and is 235 millimeters in diameter.

The East Indian Company designed the commemorative piece. The jeweler has maintained ties with the royal family for 400 years, starting in 1600 with Queen Elizabth I, who granted the original royal charter. In 1677, King Charles II allowed the East India Company the rare privilege of minting its own coinage. By 1835, King William IV authorized the use of the monarch’s effigy — establishing traditions reflected in The Crown Coin.
